The God we worship constantly surprises – a carpenter not a noble, so powerless that he ended up killed like a criminal etc. And here is yet another example. Jesus was a refugee, his family fled to Egypt to escape the killing of the first born by Herod. Refugees and aliens have a special place in the heart of God. The Jewish scriptures are quite clear that there is a responsibility to take care of the alien in the land and of course the Jewish scriptures of the Old Testament are the foundation of the Christian New Testament. If you’re interested there’s a great post of all the quotations in the Bible about treatment of aliens in your land on the Patheos website in Roger Olson’s blog if you want to take a look.
So, there are many ways and places that we can donate but there’s no question that we need to act in whatever small way we can.
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ Matt 25.40
