We’re all striving to be better people, more God-centred, or more grounded or more attractive (hence the title of the post). But St Theresa says that one day in which you are rubbish or grumpy or ineffective, a day we fall short of what we think we should be, is more valuable than any number of days in which we are well-behaved or God-focused. The reason is that it reminds us of the reality of our spiritual situation – doing is never going to get us to God because we just can’t do doing well enough. We have to accept our rubbishness and be instead. And in so doing we actually do come close to Him.
Oh and by the way, that’s the thing I find most difficult of all.
