On the Thursday night before he was turned over to the authorities by one of his closest followers and friends who had been with him for 3 years, Jesus had a meal with his friends, washed their feet and then went out to a public garden for some quiet time, to work out whether he could or should go through with what he thought was waiting for him.
He was arrested and taken for trial.
At my old church St Leonards on Maundy Thursday we would strip the church of its usual altar cloths and finery, pack away the candles and leave it in darkness with the phrase from St Matthew‘s gospel,
“All of Jesus’ disciples left him and ran away.”
Tonight we are reminded that we turn our backs on what is good and we are afraid. Tonight we have to see ourselves as we really are.
