Defining play

I  had a conversation with my mother about my ideas, the conference and this blog and almost the first thing she asked about was play as frivolity and fun. That’s when I realised that one of the most important things about discussing play is to move out of a dismissive view of play as childish and unnecessary into an understanding of the different types of play – adult and not-so.

So I have written a brief explanation of the different types of play as defined by Brian Sutton-Smith in his book The Ambiguity of Play…a title that says it all really. You can find it in Definitions of play
